Design & Digital Experience

What we do

Want to shape the future of omni-channel shopping for millions of Australians? Our multidisciplinary team don’t just focus on creating digital experiences that work for our customers; they’re always looking for ways to make those experiences more accessible, more innovative, and better connected than ever before. All so we can get closer to our purpose to sustainably feed all Australians and help them lead healthier, happier lives.

Life as a team member

We chatted to Ben, Senior Product Designer, to get all the detail on life in design and digital experience. Here’s what he had to say.

Ben Kneebone, Senior Product Designer

So, I’m a Senior Product Designer and I primarily look after the online checkout experience, which is something people have really come to rely on over the last 18 months. During this period of isolation, my team and I have been very focused on looking at how our customers are shopping to make sure we can make the experience as easy and accessible for them. Using Agile ways of working, we set strategic deliverables and then make sure we deliver on them – and we’re definitely a human centred design team. A lot of our time is spent thinking about how our new releases can bring value to the customer or working closely with design researchers to understand what they want and need, all so we can deliver an awesome experience for millions of Australians.

One of the big things is that we’re all working toward this one unified experience. We spend a lot of time thinking about how all our digital touchpoints connect – and even how they tie in with our bricks and mortar store experiences too. Unlike a startup, we’re not reactive. You get to really immerse yourself here and drive innovations forward yourself. Without having to worry if you get things wrong. That’s something that comes down directly from the executive and leadership teams: this idea that you shouldn’t be afraid to go out on a limb or make mistakes, because it’s how we all learn. There’s a strong spirit of collaboration and flexibility at all levels of the business and it makes for this really supportive environment where your wellbeing and happiness are always taken into account.

Accessibility is hugely important here. When I first interviewed to join the company, I actually spent half of my time explaining what I knew about accessibility and how it impacts user experience. So, I always knew it’d be a real focal point here. And it has been. We receive really top shelf training and spend a lot of time working together to ensure we’re not only accessibility compliant but thinking accessibility first – which means I’m almost at the stage where I don’t even have to think about it. It’s so front of mind. That and sustainability. There’s often the perception that big retailers are just contributors to unsustainable practices, so it’s really amazing to be part of a company that’s prioritising purpose. Especially one as huge as Coles.

“I think the best thing about working here is being able to point to the things you’ve done that are actually improving the lives of millions of Australians.”

-Ben Kneebone, Senior Product Designer
