To hear more about what goes on in the Engineering team we had a chat with Lead Software Engineer, Max Paik.

Max Paik, Lead Software Engineer

I sit in the CX API team and look after multiple back end for front end applications. Essentially, we are responsible for orchestrating data and transforming it into information for our app or website. I like having responsibility for one of the most used applications in Australia, with thousands upon thousands of requests every second. Influencing that many customers is a motivation. You clearly understand how Coles’ customers are experiencing our applications and why we want to improve certain parts and why provide certain applications.

I joined Coles – which people still see as a traditional retailer – from a massive digital organisation. And what I love about Coles is that this is a company that is willing to transform, improve and dive into innovation. That creates a different culture to a company that already thinks they are very advanced. Here we’re building something. Coles is probably more agile than people think, we’re continually discussing how we can improve process better. It’s very open like that. People are very collaborative here and there are lots and lots of opportunities that if you want to explore something you can. You feel confident that you can invest yourself here because they are going to look after your personal goals.

Not many people get to say that they are part of a massive company that millions of Australians rely on. Like I said, I like being part of that responsibility. And purpose runs deep at Coles. I think about how seriously we take compliance, the goals we need to meet, and the very strict rules we adhere to. That’s all to protect the customer. That all feeds into our purpose.

Our Recruitment Process

We appreciate that making an application can be stressful so we've worked hard to make the process as easy as we can.
Here’s how it works:

Apply for a role by submitting your resume and personal details and answering a few easy eligibility questions.

If it looks like you could be good fit for the role, one of our Talent Acquisition team members will set up a time for a call to discuss the position and your suitability further.

Step 3

At the 1st stage interview you’ll get the chance to meet the team and learn more about life at Coles. At the same time, we’ll look to understand more about you, your experience, and relevant skillsets.

Step four:

Depending on the role, you may be required to complete an assessment task. One of the Talent Acquisition team will outline this process for you.

Step 5

Step five:

Additional interviews give you further opportunities to get to know the leaders or key stakeholders you would be working with, and ask any final questions you have about the position, the team and the organisation.

Step 6

Step six:

Once you have been identified as the preferred candidate and receive a verbal offer, you will be required to complete pre-employment checks. These include, working rights, criminal history, and employment verification.

Step 7

Step seven:

Welcome to Coles! Having signed your contract, you’ll go through onboarding and your line manager will be in touch with you before you start to discuss arrangements for your first day.
